Independent financial advice

Getting advice

Decisions about your pension can be complicated. They can also have a big impact on your finances in retirement. This is why it’s important to get help if you need it.

Independent financial advisers

An independent financial adviser can make recommendations about what you should do, rather than just explain your options. Financial advice can:

  • Provide options you didn’t know you had
  • Give you confidence you’re making the best decision for you
  • Help you get the most from your savings

We'd always recommend that you talk to an FCA authorised financial adviser, especially if you're planning to retire soon or thinking of transferring out of the Fund.

A financial adviser must tell you how much they charge before they provide you with advice.

How the process works

Your adviser will ask you to provide full details of your financial circumstances. This will most likely be in the form of a questionnaire. Then you’ll meet your adviser to talk through your answers. Your adviser will also want to know what you want from your money, and you can ask any questions. The adviser will then review the available options and provide you with a report and recommendation for what you should do.

You don’t need to follow the recommendation, and you can talk to your adviser if you have any queries about it, or want to explore other options.

How to find an adviser

Financial advisers are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). Scammers sometimes pose as advisers, so it’s important that you make sure any adviser you use is on the FCA’s list of authorised firms. You can check if a financial adviser is registered on the FCA website.
